FAQ


I) How long does it take to get a Thesis bound?
Can be collected 24 hours later if physically submitted at our premises between 8am and 4pm on any weekday. Theses submitted before 4pm have their binding commenced that day and so can be collected the following day.. If after 4pm they are counted as 8am submissions in the following day and so can be collected 8am the next day.
Soft binds (apart from Latrobe specifications) done same day if required, at no extra charge
II) Can we jump the queue using this website?
Cheeky, but give it a go !!!!.... even if you submit online outside the above hours you cannot jump the queue.. our staff do need some sleep.. HOWEVER, we do give online submissions a degree of priority.
If you need absolute priority there is a same day jump everything service fee of $82.50 for hard binds. This fee is purposely high to dissuade people (it includes GST) and is not subject to any discount offers. 
III) Can I submit Saturday?
You can do so online.
Saturday is not normally a working day for the physical bindery. However, around the end of the year towards the summer close down Saturday may become a working day. Ask if you are submitting early December or late November.
IV) What margins are needed ?
Unless your institution requires otherwise, 25mm on the sewing edge is quite adequate. We trim 2mm off all 3 outside edges and larger formatted fold out pages should have the outside fold 5mm from the outer edge. The text on pages should be layed out with these constraints in mind
V) Christmas Closedown
Yes we close, unlike most of Melbourne's binders, we only close for 2 weeks, remember this if you have deadlines or you will not meet them. This website will have details at the relevant time
VI) What is the difference between the colours called OXFORD and the non oxford colours of the same colour?
eg: Oxford Black & Black
We have called the English manufactured Buckrams "Oxford" The others are from the USA or Europe. The Oxford cloths are matt in appearance whilst the others except the linens, are shinier
VII) What is Buckram?
Buckram is an extra durable cloth with strong warp and weft threads. It is used in other applications to bookbinding, including hats and suitcases. All the Universities specify that it be used to cover Theses. It is far more expensive than normal bookbinding cloths and not generally used by larger edition binders
VIII) Do you have other cloths for artistic bindings?
We have been so disappointed in the range of creative materials available to Australias bookbinders that we import our own range as well as stocking the standard ones available to our competitors.Our range larger than the suppliers stock, ranging from PU to linens and silk. We even commission our own tumeric tanned leathers from time to time.
IX) Do you provide a special leather binding to give to my parents or to keep for myself?
Yes we do a 23kt tooled and edge gilded copy in full leather with coloured title labels and marbled endpapers  (optional at no charge) We are the only bookbinders in Australia capable of doing this. Turnaround is one working week. Payment in advance.
X) What about graphics projects?
You would be mad to go elsewhere. We have inhouse computer cutting. So you can get us to cut out intricate windows. Flat bed UV printing on any substrate including glass. Inhouse engraving, and offset and letetrpress printing. Our offset platemaking is chemical free.
XI) Do you make book and presentation boxes to order?
Not only do we make boxes to order, we can print the covering to order also. This enables you to use your full creatice suite to design your book cover or box. We acceept all illustrator files as well as others.

If you submit online and require 24 hour service, it might be a good idea to call after submission to ensure that the order is processed.  We are often busy and it can sometimes be a few hours before all emails are responded to.

We complete countless graphics projects for design firms, students and large businesses every year.  Along with the craftsmen doing traditional binding, we employ a team to run our digital cutting table and wide format printers.  These elements allow us to provide you with maximum creativity when it comes to your projects.  If it can be done, we pride ourselves on being able to do it.
